Rainy days are the most debatable days throughout the year, some love it, some hate it, but no one can deny that it is the coziest day of all. Gray clouds gurgling, the soft breeze carrying light drizzles, and the scent of wet mud make you want to do nothing and lay back on your bed the whole day.
For some, it’s heavenly and calming, but for others, it can be the most dreadful days of the year. Your plans can get ruined, you might end up feeling down or simply get bored out of your mind or if you live alone, you might start feeling lonely.
As someone who lives alone and loves monsoon over any other season, I’ve curated a list of cozy things you can do to cheer up your mood and feel productive as well, or can do simply for fun.
1. Books ~ Coffee ~ Rain

These three are like the perfect trio, no one can resist. The sound of the rain falling on your roof or window, as you indulge in a cozy book, especially if it’s a suspense thriller, is like the icing on the cake with a perfect cheery of coffee. Hot coffee, a perfect fantasy/cozy mystery, and the sound of rain enhance the feeling as you uncover the twists and turns of the book.
It’s one of the best ways to unwind on a lazy, rainy day, and personally one of my favorite. Some of the books I recommend from my own favorite reads are –
- Tell me your Dreams by Sidney Sheldon
- Sherlock Holmes series by Arthur Conan Doyle
- The girl on the train by Paula Hawkins
- Fifty Shades Series by E.L. James
2. Movie Marathon

You want to binge on a show/movie you have put on hold because of your hectic schedule? Now’s the time. Pop some popcorn, dim the light, open the window to let the natural light in, or to feel the drizzles and soft, cold breeze, wrap that soft, warm blanket around you, and binge on your favorite show or movie.
My favorite ones I have binged on several times are Shadowhunters (the one that impacted my life in the best possible way), The Vampire Diaries (Stefan Salvatore and steroline stan here), Minions, Sherlock Holmes, (show and movie both), and Lucifer.
3. Home spa with a solo date

Sounds like some much-needed me time? Yup, it is! Does a cold shower on a cold day sound fun to you? Nah? Then you can switch it with a hot shower or simply let your body rest while you indulge in a cozy, warm bath with your preferred bath bomb. Let it soothe your mind and body and follow up with your pamper kit, be it a facial, full body massage with a body or essential oil, or simply a peel-off mask.
How can self-care be complete without taking care of your tummy? A perfect spa day deserves to end with a perfect meal, preferably a solo date with yourself. Order a takeout if you can or prepare your comfort food and devour it with a side of red wine or a drink of your choice and enjoy a mindful evening while listening to the beautiful sound of rain.
4. Camp inside because you can

You don’t need a fancy tent to do that. Ever heard of a blanket fort? If you don’t own a small tent that you can easily set up in a spacious area, you can make a blanket fort by simply dragging a mattress to lay on, lots and lots of pillows, blankets, and clips to tie it to the wall or heavy books to secure the blanket if you’re using chairs or couch to make it look like a fort, and it will be ready within a few minutes.
Now all you need is your laptop, phone, books, or a packet of chips, light up some scented candles or diffuse essential oils, and cozy up in your DIY camp with a side of hot coffee or s’mores or a warm, enriching noodle soup.
5. Create a cozy corner

Not in the mood to get out of bed? The rain is making you sleepy? Well, you don’t have to. Rainy days are synonyms for sleeping in as long as you want. Cuddle inside your blanket, put on a Spotify playlist if you want, and have that dreamy perfect lazy day you craved for.
6. Break a sweat

Want to feel a little productive when the rain is making you feel low? Get your yoga mat and get on with your exercise routine. Don’t forget to open those windows to let the natural cool breeze in to have a calming effect while you work out.
Another way of feeling productive is to redecorate that corner you wanted for so long or to declutter and organize your wardrobe or other parts of the house while listening to the soothing sound of rain.
7. Lazy cooking

Who doesn’t love food? Well, not everyone loves cooking, though. If you love cooking, doing so while enjoying the melody of nature is going to be the best way to enjoy your day. If you don’t, you still can enjoy it by doing some lazy cooking. (I’m gonna assume you’re not the ones who even burns water, ‘cause lady, get outta that kitchen if so, you have other things to choose from this list).
Put on your apron, bring on those veggies, and you got a whole day to slowly chop them and make your choice of food. It could be as simple as cup noodles (you only need to boil water for that) or your comfort dish to unwind with the thunderstorm. My personal favorite is soupy noodles with lots of veggies in it.
8. Stir up the creator in you

Let’s be honest, we’ve all got a creator in us, be it creating art on paper or with paper. There is no such thing as bad when it comes to creating something because it’s all about experimenting. Who knows what you might come up with? So bring out your brushes, pens, pencils, manuscript, guitar, or whatever you love creating, and start creating because who knows what type of inspiration a cozy thunderstorm provides you with.
9. Practice meditation

Meditation is the art of practicing mindfulness and eliminating thoughts to clear your mind to help you focus on the present. There are so many benefits of meditation like it increases focus and productivity and helps in reducing stress and anxiety. (I can confirm it does because I’m doing it for months now).
If you love the power of meditation, why not try it while listening to the soft sound of rain falling on your rooftop or window? There’s no better way to let go of everything and cherish the music of nature.
10. Try something new

If you love experimenting, and learning new things, this one is for you. While you’ve got nothing to do, hop on to YouTube and look for some new things to try. There’s literally everything on the web these days. Some things from my own bucket list include making a sun catcher or dreamcatcher, making candles, trying scrapbooking, having a whole night movie marathon, learning to use a high-tech camera, and making homemade ice cream. The list goes on and on. There’s so much to learn and discover, so why not use that lazy, cozy, free time for that?
Next time when it rains, don’t forget to check back on this list and find the activity that calls out to you.
