Writing style is a major part of how you bring your ideas to life. I have talked about writing styles in a previous post. Today, I want to explore more about this and talk about how a writing style can shape the stories that come alive under your pen (or, let’s be real, your favorite keyboard). No matter your chosen form – novels, heartfelt essays, or bite-sized short stories – your approach makes each creation uniquely yours.
Writing Novels: Mapping Journeys and Wandering Paths
Writing a novel is much like setting out on a cross-country train ride: do you buy your tickets in advance, plan every stop, and pack a detailed itinerary (hello, plotters)? Or do you jump on board, letting the scenery and fellow travelers decide where you’ll go next (classic pantser energy)? Maybe, just maybe, you sketch out a dream route but let yourself explore a side town when it calls out to you (the hybrid magic).
Plotters shape intricate worlds. The careful planners, like J.K. Rowling, tend to ensure every plot twist lands exactly as intended. Their chapters build on detailed outlines with the joy of ticking off milestones as the story unfolds.
Pantsers create tales that surprise even themselves. If your heart has a soft spot for magical realism or wild adventures, you might write much like Stephen King – letting characters, settings, or unexpected twists lead the way. There’s delight in the unknown, and sometimes the result is richer for it.
Hybrids, like me, start with just enough structure, only to drift when inspiration strikes. The story often ends up far from the initial plan, and sometimes that’s where the magic happens.
Articles and Essays: Organizing Thoughts with a Dash of Spontaneity
Articles and essays are often about arguing a point or sharing a perspective. The tools you choose can make all the difference (personally, I love my traditional pen-and-paper approach). Plotters tackle these forms with well-organized research and clear headers that guide readers through the argument. You’ll see crisp logic, backed by sources—everything lined up just so.
Pantsers write with heart first. They let the story or “angle” evolve, injecting their voice as ideas unfold. This style brings unexpected insights and a conversational warmth.
Hybrids start with a plan but let tangents happen, finding connections as they go. The result? A piece that’s both thoughtfully structured and sparkling with lived experience.
Short Stories: Tiny Worlds, Giant Impact
Short stories really do pack a punch. Plotters craft endings that satisfy—using compact outlines to ensure every word counts. Their stories are neat but never sterile, each page guiding you to a planned finish.
Pantsers shine in building compelling characters or wild scenarios, sometimes arriving at jaw-dropping endings simply by letting the story wander where it wishes. These tales are full of life, sometimes quirky, always memorable.
Hybrids might sketch a theme or prompt, but let emotion dictate the journey. Thematic cores ground the story, but there’s room for pleasant detours and surprise endings.
Where Each Style Shines
- Plotters thrive with intricate mysteries, historical fiction, or any story needing puzzle-like precision.
- Pantsers excel in magical realism, memoir, or stream-of-consciousness tales that embrace chaos.
- Hybrids strike gold with layered narratives, character-driven novels, and articles that need both backbone and heart.
Don’t be afraid to stretch – if you’re detail-oriented, try letting a story find its own ending. If you love spontaneity, experiment with an outline just for fun. There’s joy in both knowing and not knowing.
My Cozy Writing Journey
I’m a hybrid writer myself; I love to plan things out, but my mind drifts away midway, and I always end up writing a different ending than I had at the beginning. I always start with planning out the world of my fanfictions (fantasy is my love and escape), always in the traditional pen and paper format, then I plan out the events of each chapter (but never together at the beginning). This goes for everything I write, plan out at the start, but my imagination takes the draft somewhere else.
If you’re reading this and thinking, “Me too!” – you’re not alone. Cozy up with your favorite drink and let your style guide you.
