Heart of the Raven Prince by Tessonja Odette is a standalone fae fantasy romance novel and a captivating retelling of the classic fairy tale Cinderella. It features a slow-burn romance, a fake engagement, and plenty of witty banter between its main characters, Ember Montgomery and Prince Franco.
I found Heart of the Raven Prince while casually exploring ebooks on the Kindle app, and honestly, it turned out to be one of the best finds for me. You know those moments when you download a book without many expectations, and it ends up completely stealing your heart? This was exactly that kind of read.
At its core, this is a Cinderella retelling but set in a fae universe, with rich worldbuilding and a fresh perspective that makes it feel entirely its own. If you think this is simply the same old Cinderella story with nothing new to add, you couldn’t be more wrong. Tessonja Odette has done an incredible job with this series of retellings. Each book feels thoughtfully crafted, imaginative, and full of heart. This particular book got me interested in exploring her other works, and once I did, there was no going back. Her worlds are whimsical, immersive, and genuinely magical.
Coming back to the review, Heart of the Raven Prince follows Ember Montgomery and Prince Franco and their beautifully written love story. The romance unfolds slowly, allowing the characters to grow individually and together, which makes the emotional payoff feel all the more satisfying.
Here are other things that I really liked/loved about this book:
- What really stood out to me was how uniquely written the story felt. Even though it’s inspired by a well-known fairy tale, it never once felt predictable or boring. I was fully invested from the beginning, and I genuinely enjoyed every moment I spent reading this book.
- Tessonja’s writing style is simple, warm, and easy to grasp. There are a few fancy words sprinkled throughout, but nothing overly complicated or distracting. It’s the kind of writing that flows smoothly, making it easy to get lost in the story.
- The world-building deserves a special mention because it was done so well. The fae universe felt alive, layered, and thoughtfully developed. At no point did it feel like I was reading a direct retelling of a popular fairy tale. Instead, it felt like stepping into a brand-new world that just happened to echo a familiar story in the best possible way.
- The characters were another strong point. Ember and Franco were both well-written, with flaws, imperfections, and emotional depth that made them feel real. The arc and growth of them throughout the book is what we readers enjoy. And the twist at the end was impressive. I was rooting for the characters and cursing the villains the whole time.
Overall, it was an amazing read for me. I don’t have anything bad to say about this book because I genuinely enjoyed every part of it. Heart of the Raven Prince was amazing, captivating, whimsical, and cozy.
If you enjoy fairy tale retellings, slow-burn romance, and beautifully built magical worlds, this book is absolutely worth picking up.
