Curse of the Wolf King – Book Review

Curse of the Wolf King by Tessonja Odette is a popular fantasy romance novel and a Beauty and the Beast retelling. It is the first book in the Entangled with Fae series and can be read as a standalone story. The story follows Gemma Bellefleur, a woman determined to live an independent life after a past scandal leaves her an outcast in human society. She is unexpectedly captured by King Elliot, the brooding Unseelie King of the Winter Court, who is under a deadly curse.

Another favourite book of mine by Tessonja Odette from her Entangled with Fae series. Honestly, I am obsessed with her works, and I am currently reading the last book in the series. So coming back to Curse of the Wolf King, I absolutely love this one and how she has written the retelling of Beauty and the Beast, where it obviously follows the story around Gemma and Elliot.

It felt a little slow at the beginning, but once it gained pace, it was really an amazing read. I had my heart pounding when Gemma reached the palace and was surrounded by wolves. I was frustrated with Elliot and how he treated her in the beginning, but as the story progressed, the character arc—especially Elliot’s—was amazing to read. I completely fell in love with the ending, and spoiler alert: I never liked Queen Nyxia since her introduction in Heart of the Raven Prince.

Here are other things that I really liked/loved about this book:

  • The setting was amazing, and the plot was nothing like the traditional Beauty and the Beast. It felt refreshing and enchanting in its own way.
  • Tessonja’s writing is simply amazing, and like I mentioned in my other reviews, it is mind-blowing and easy to read. She is becoming one of the writers whose entire body of work I definitely want to read.
  • The characters—Gemma and Elliot—were brilliantly written, and so were the other characters we got to see throughout the book. As I mentioned, Queen Nyxia was annoying, but I absolutely loved the ending. Both the characters had their own flaws and drawbacks, which made them more relatable and easier to root for in the end.
  • The tension and longing between the characters were really well written, and I really enjoyed that part, especially when they started falling for each other but were still denying it. The story was slow at some points, but overall, it was a really good read for me.

Overall, the story was such an amazing read for me, and I highly recommend it. If you are reading it in winter, definitely do that because it gives off a slightly mysterious, cosy vibe at times, along with fantasy and thrill. The setting around the slightly abandoned manor really adds to the atmosphere, so it is definitely, definitely recommended.
