2022 is almost over. It’s hard to believe, but it’s true. With the onset of 2023, everyone must be preparing to make their resolution list, they must be planning their next moves, how next year will be for them, and honestly, I am too. But along with planning for what’s ahead, what lies in the future, it’s important to reflect on what has already happened.
The previous two years had been tough on everyone, but with time, things went back to normal. People started working again, living again, but for me, I was still stuck. I wanted to move on, but life had other plans for me and looking back, I’m wholeheartedly grateful for them.
As I’ve mentioned from time to time, 2022 had been the worst and best year of my life. It taught me so much, it made me realize so many things, so before I think about 2023, and start setting goals and plans for 2023, I want to look back, and reflect on what this year had taught me. So here are 5 things that this year taught me, and I’m glad it happened.
1. Worst experiences are the best experiences
2022, the year I got to meet the demons in me. The year that made me look deeper into myself. It broke me, tested me, played with me, but in the end, it made me stronger. I started off this year with so many plans – learning new hobbies, starting a small business, working on my writing, and maybe publishing a book.
I planned to move out at the start of this year, but what followed was months and months of emotional and mental breakdowns due to so many reasons. This year gave me some of the worst experiences I’ve ever faced, but also taught me so much about life and me. I have a big life ahead of me, big challenges to face, but I know that I’m no longer the person I was a few years ago, all thanks to these experiences.
2. Life is more than a 9-5
To be honest with you all, I’m still an unemployed person trying to figure out my life and career. Well, I was employed two years ago, as a fashion trainee, but I’ve realized that’s not the career I want, hence I’m testing the waters before I dive deeper. But in these two years, especially in 2022, when I broke free from the chains I was used to, I realized the universal chain of a 9-5 job is way stronger, and I don’t want to be tied to that.
I do want a career, I might have to do a job for a passive income and to gain experience, but is this life all about? The answer is no. Life is not confined between four walls or a robotic 9-5, it’s about exploring, learning new things, finding happiness in small things and so much more. I realized this after spending 24 years in a mental hell I created myself, but I’ve finally broken free and am ready to live as I should.
3. Made me determined and strong-willed
Before this downfall, I always used to doubt myself. For the smallest of things. When I used to start something new, it never lasted. I had the bad habit of giving up easily, but it changed this year. Be it my blog, designing or small tasks, I learned to be consistent and patient, and it changed me for the better.
I am yet to discover my true passion, (in different types of writing apart from what I already do) still doing trial and error, but looking back, I was even scared of doing that, so I’m proud of the progress I made and will keep going as long as I live.
4. You are your worst enemy
You may think others put you down, others are responsible for your downfalls, and that might be true, but if you don’t let it affect you, it will not affect you. Self-negative talk is legit, and I’ve destroyed myself by doing it my whole life. People called me names, commented on my looks, and I took it to heart. So much that I believed in those things more than I believed in myself.
I used to believe that I’m worthless, I’m good for nothing, I have no potential, I look ugly, I hated myself for my whole life, and now I’m paying for it. I had to remind myself every day that I’m thankful for my body, that I’m beautiful, worthy, and deserving.
I’m starting my life from scratch once again and if you’re in my position as well, remember only you can destroy yourself, so don’t let others overpower you. You are stronger than you think. If I can overcome it, you can too.
5. A positive mindset can be the key to every door in life
I never believed in any motivational speaker until I started practicing positivity in my own life. Be it meditation, yoga, reading, or any other activity, having a positive space and mind can do wonders. I know I’ve changed a lot since I started practicing meditation and yoga. I’ve become a calmer and more patient person. I’ve started seeing life from a different perspective. I don’t mind that I’m still unemployed or stuck when my friends are thriving and living their best lives.
I know my day will come. I know my life is different from others, and it has its own destiny. So what if my life is slower than others? It’s meant to be like that. I used to compare myself with others, but now I am happy for their success rather than being jealous. I’m in no way near becoming a saint, but I know that I’m working towards becoming a better version of me, and that’s all it’s about. Living a happy and good life instead of making other’s business my own.
With 2023 approaching, I’m open and prepared to work on myself and my career. I’m open to new opportunities to arrive and leave my demons behind. Who knows what miracles are waiting for me or you in this jolly new year.
